After the 2009 Worlds

“Every female figure skater in the United States who has Olympic aspirations and did not see Kim Yu-Na win the world championship Saturday night at Staples Center should be required to watch Kim's “Sheherazade” routine before taking to the ice again.

Not simply to remind them they are incredibly far from matching what the 18-year-old South Korean achieved and that they're unlikely to win a medal next February at the Vancouver Olympics.”

Interview After Worlds 2009

R: reporter Y: Yu-Na

R: tell us about the botched 3salchow and invalid spin.
Y: We changed the spin after 4CC, it was a shame that we didn't double-check it but I think it was a lesson, it will never happen again.

R: What did you think about after missing the 3Salchow?
Y: I couldn't complete the jump because it slipped but I tried to focus on my program so that it doesn't affect the rest of it. I hadn't thought about the marks but I think it was a good experience to break the 200 barrier. I'm not sure if I will be able to keep scoring high but I'll try to do my best.

R: There were lots of Korean cheering for you with the flag.
Y: Yes, not only at this Worlds but also at 4CC in Vancouver. I felt very comfortable like I was in my home country. I skate with more joy if crowd reacts to me.

R: You cried on the podium hearing the national anthem. What were you thinking about?
Y: I usually feel like crying when I stand on the podium and hear the national anthem but I try to hold it back. I waited so long for this day and I couldn't hold it back this time.

R: What does it mean to be a World Champion to you?
Y: This is my third time to go to Worlds and last two ones, I couldn't get prepared, I think I was quite lucky to win a bronze each. But this time I was really prepared and the performance usually go well accordingly. This was a good experience before Olympics.

R: This year your programs were really intense, what would you like to try in coming season?
Y: I don't know, I haven't given a serious thought about it. But I want to use a music which is somewhat popular that people would know when they hear about it, I think 'intense' suits me well.

R: What was your key for the victory?
Y: The fact that I stayed healthy and maintain the good condition. I felt confident preparing, I wasn't nervous and skated like I've practiced.

R: A lot of so-called legends including Kwan and Yamaguchi were speaking highly of you.
Y: I'm honored to hear compliments from them whom I'd looked up to from when I was a kid. I really appreciate it. I want to be remembered as they are once I retire from competitive skating.

R: Your take on this season as it's ending?
Y: This season, more I practiced, more I got confident. I seldom got nervous in competitions. I'm very happy that it also ended well.

R: Will you participate in next year 4cc which is going to be held in Jeon-Ju korea?
Y: I think it would be difficult for me to participate because of the Olympics.

R: What's Brian Orser like?
Y: Brian had had an amazing rivalry with Brian Boitano before I was even born and I think the situation is quite similar to mine. He knows how I feel and what I think about. He offers me more advice because he's been there. He also gives his students time to think without stressing them. It is really helpful because I feel peaceful practicing with him.

R: What were you thinking when you heard the national anthem?
Y: To be honest, nothing in particular. I kept thinking that I'll be extremely disappointed with myself if I don't do well this time.

R: What would you like to do after retiring?
Y: It's like a far, far future to talk about retirement. I'm only thinking about what I have to do right now. I'll have plenty of time to think about it after I accomplish my goal.

R: Will you be able to defend your World title?
Y: It has been only several hours since I became one so it still seems little surreal to me. I think there's definitely a pressure because people's expectation gets high, but if I can only be ready and prepared like this time, I won't get worried.

R: What were you doing 3 years ago when Torino Olympcis were held??
Y: Probably I was training. I knew that I'm going to be there someday when I was watching Nagano Olympics. as a skater and performer, I used to think how nervous the skaters must be watching them in TV.
