The collaboration of ‘Figure Queen’ Yuna Kim and 'The current trend' IU, ‘Ice Flower’ the theme song of SBS TV’s <Kim Yuna’s Kiss & Cry>
The collaboration of the two 'National Daughters' of Korea has finally come together. ‘Ice Flower,’ the duet song between IU, a young, successful singer who rose to national stardom with her great vocal skills, and Yuna Kim, who has singing skills to rival her skating skills, has finally been revealed. This duet was first suggested by IU, and Yuna, who was a fan of IU, gladly accepted. ‘Ice Flower’ will be used as the theme song for SBS TV’s entertainment program ‘Kim Yuna’s Kiss & Cry’ and all proceeds from the song will be used for the improvement of the figure skating environment in Korea.
The duet of Yuna Kim and IU drew a lot of attention even before the song was actually released. ‘Ice Flower’ is a product of the collaboration between the hit composer Lee Min-Soo and lyric writer Kim Yi-Na. It is predicted to be a smash-hit like Lee’s previous hit songs such as “잔소리(Nagging)”and “좋은 날(Good Day)”.
The opening melody was inspired by the famous American children’s song, ‘Grandfather’s Clock’. The voices of IU and Yuna are soft, smooth, and easy on the ears at the beginning of the song. As the song reaches the climax in the reprise, the vocal skills of IU and Yuna accentuate the huge scale of this dramatic song. The motif for the lyrics of ‘Ice Flower' comes from the tears that Yuna showed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, after skating the program of a lifetime. An ice flower is very beautiful and sparkly, but it soon melts into water.
The voices of IU and Yuna portray the hope that the tears shed during the process of development will not simply be tears of sadness, but tears that will help build the foundation to blossom once again – just like the ‘Ice Flower’. The producing staff were worried because the song had many high notes but Yuna showed off her singing abilities and surprised the staff and even IU.
Two people who were captivated by Yuna’s and IU’s warms hearts also pitched in to help. It was none other than NEXT and 부활(Bu-hwal), who are considered as legends in Korean rock music. Kim Sae-Hwang, guitarist of NEXT and Korea’s best technician, played the guitar solo at the climax of the song, and Seo Jae-Heok, the bassist of Bu-hwal, played the bass, elevating the quality of the song.
Some people may cheer for you while others may criticize you on your journey to your dreams. But what is important to believe in yourself and to never falter in spite of such things, just as Yuna and IU have done.
‘Ice Flower’ sends a message of strength and hope to all who are striving to make their dreams come true.
