Life in Canada

Yuna first visited Toronto, Canada in May 2006 to be choreographed by David Wilson, her favourite Choreographer since his 2004 Super Mario piece for Nobunari Oda that left an indelible impression on her. She did not have a coach at the time. Brian Orser happened to be tutoring at the cricket club with his PRO stats at the time, so Yuna was able to benefit from both parties' advice, as well as Tracy Wilson who was also based on site.

Yuna has described her training with Orser as comfortable. She liked the fact he doesn't force her accept his instructions, he only correct her when she made mistakes and doesn't really talk a lot that suited her style, as too much talking often lead to distractions in training. She likes Orser's calm and collaborative style; the fact he trust in her abilities to simply deliver what he knows she is capable of. Orser is excellent at adjusting tensions, when Yuna too relaxed, Orser would become stricter with her; when Yuna is too stressed, Orser will find ways to relax and calm her. Their relationship is based on getting to know each other's style and build on greater mutual trust.

Yuna and her mother actively pursued Orser to coach Yuna full time. Orser was originally hesitant due to the fact he was still a PRO and touring at the time, and he is aware of the commitment necessary to facilitate this important role in Yuna's career. Having rejected the offer several times, he eventually give in and became Yuna's coach in 2007, much to the industry and press scrutiny at the time due to his apparent 'lack of proven experience' in coaching. Yuna and Mother took a risk, and it paid up handsomely to Orser's credit and full commitment. Orser was able to build a team of specialist coaches for Yuna, and devised a coaching style that is right for her. Together with Wilson, Orser became strategic in how they devised her program, pick elements that suited the COP and to ensure her general well being by minimising chances of injuries which would be her achilles heel.

Yuna officially relocated to Toronto Canada in March 2007, where the cricket club had became a safe haven for her to train in relative peace and quiet, and Toronto is where Yuna enjoyed some anonymity compares to her life in Korea.

At Toronto, Yuna were able to find a welcoming second home, a sort of sanctuary from the media frenzy in Korea. Particularly at the Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club where she had became a popular positive figure and were able to become more sociable with other skaters with during her late teens. While Yuna's Brian Orser's first official student, soon she was joined by Adam Rippon and Christina Gao and many others as Orser's coaching reputation builds. FIXME

Many have remarked on the positive influence she bring to the rink and at the club, particularly with the increasing numbers of little girls who took up skating inspired by her. There are often celebration parties in her honour after a big win.
