Power of Youth: Last 1°C to boil water

“Even if you work hard to raise the temperature to 99 degrees, if you can’t get over the last 1 degree, they say the water will never boil. Boiling water is that last degree. It is surviving/continuing during that one minute where I want to give up.” - Quote from Yuna's essay, '7 Minute Drama'.

Yuna in NY to receive "Sportswoman of the Year Award"

Yuna Kim wins the Sportswoman of the Year Award for individual sport athlete. Yuna is the first Asian winner in the award history.

Yu-Na Kim attended the 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports which was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. From http://www.lifeskate.com/skate/2010/1… This is an event hosted by the Women's Sports Foundation, an organization founded by legendary tennis great Billie Jean King to help and inspire young girls everywhere to reach their dreams. In all, more than 60 world-class athletes from track and field to golf to swimming to snowboarding – you name the sport, the crème de la crème were there – came together under one roof to celebrate women's accomplishments and contributions to sports.

Figure skating was well represented by Yu-Na Kim, Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes. Interestingly, Michelle is a past recipient of a Women's Sports Foundation scholarship so this organization is near and dear to her heart. Here is my conversation with Yu-Na and we talk about her recent move to Los Angeles from Toronto, her coaching change from Brian Orser to Peter Oppegard, and her idol Michelle Kwan. Yu-Na was also nominated for Sportswoman of the Year and she won later in the evening! See complete coverage of Yu-Na Kim at: http://www.lifeskate.com/skate/yu-na-…

Yu-Na Kim wins Sportswoman of the Year

Just got back from New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the Women's Sports Foundation held its 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports. Had great conversations with Yu-Na Kim, Michelle Kwan, Sarah Hughes, Billie Jean King, and others (all of which will be featured in upcoming videos). But wanted to share great news about Yu-Na, who looked very elegant and might I say, Hollywood (not surprising given her relocation to Los Angeles). She received Sportswoman of the Year. Also nominated were Kelly Kulick (first woman to be part of the previously all male Professional Bowlers Association Tour), Alana Nichols (Paralympic champion in wheelchair basketball and alpine skier), Sanya Richards (Olympic champion in track and field) and Anna Tunnicliffe (Olympic champion sailor).

Yuna's Award Acceptance Speech:

Kim Yuna is named 2010’s sportswoman of the yearby SEARIMS on October 13, 2010 at 1:29 pm

On October 13, the Women’s Sports Foundation held its 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports. With the awards dinner taking place at New York’s famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the world’s top female athletes were acknowledged and honored for their remarkable achievements, unparalleled performances, significant contributions to women in sports and the girls they inspire across the globe.

Amongst the top female athletes who graced the event was South Korea’s very own national icon, Olympic and World Figure Skating Champion Kim Yuna.

Kim was honored withe the highly coveted Sportswoman of the Year Award. Kim was chosen for her many outstanding achievements, which include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • At the Ladies’ Singles event at the Trophée Eric Bompard event in Paris, Kim became the first woman to have a combined final score of over 210 points and finishing 36.04 points ahead of her closest competitor.
  • At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games held in Vancouver, Kim won the gold medal by a land slide in the Ladies’ Singles event, making her the first Korean to medal in Figure Skating at an Olympic Winter Games.
  • Kim is currently ranked No.1 by the International Skating Union and has medalled in every single event that she has competed in ever since her senior debut in 2006.

Kim accepted the prestigious award and gave her acceptance speech stating, “It’s a great honor for me to receive the Sportswoman of the Year award and I would like to express my sincere gratitude [to the federation]. For me, this is not just any award and brings forth much meaning. As a figure skater, I would very much hope for this award to launch opportunities for young girls to enter the world of figure skating and enjoy the sport”.

Kim continued, by expressing, “In spite of everything, there still remains many countries around the world that discourage women from actively participating in sports and fitness due to the prevailing social norm that emphasizes the notion of femininity. However, I strongly believe that it’s time for us to break away from such social conventions. Sports not only helps develop the physical body for both men and women, it also helps and enhances the development of one’s mental capabilities to think more extensively and thoroughly. Through sports, not only do we learn the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play; we also learn how to respect the rules and learn to develop sincere friendship between athletes. I believe that this knowledge should not just remain as attainments by athletes but should also serve as virtues maintained by every person.”

Kim concluded her acceptance speech, saying “By accepting this award, I hope I have at least become a small driving force for people to enjoy and live a dynamic lifestyle through sports. Lastly, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to my family and friends who always been a pillar of strength by my side. Thank you.”

As 2010’s sportswoman of the year, Kim is the first Asian and the 3rd non-American athlete to win this prestigious award, further adding significance to this coveted accomplishment.

Meanwhile, Kim who has decided to compete only at the upcoming season’s World Championships in Japan and will continue her training at the East West Ice Palace in Artesia, California under the tutelage of newly appointed coach, Peter Oppegard. Kim is also set to start work on a new short program with her choreographer David Wilson later this month.

Speech at UN Student commemoration of the International Day of Peace on behalf of UNICEF

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Yuna Kim to visit the United Nations to mark International Day of Peace

NEW YORK, 16 September 2010 – UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and international skating sensation, Yuna Kim, arrives in New York today for a two-day visit to help mark the International Day of Peace at the United Nations with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and to remind the world ahead of a high-level Summit next week that peace is key to bringing prosperity.

“Peace is what enables development and is critical in providing opportunities to young people,” said Ms. Kim prior to arriving in New York. “Efforts to preserve peace are absolutely vital in bringing prosperity and hope for the future.”

Ms. Kim will attend the celebration of the International Day of Peace on 17 September, where she will also interact with students from New York and around the world to speak about their role and ability to contribute to peace and development.

The 2010 Olympic gold winner is in New York just days ahead of the 20 to 22 September Summit at the United Nations where world leaders and high level officials will focus on accelerating progress towards achieving all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

Children continue to be at the heart of these goals, from fighting hunger and extreme poverty, child and maternal mortality, gender inequality, securing primary education for all, stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and protecting the environment while building global partnerships for development.

In connection with the MDG summit, Ms. Kim has taped a public service announcement to remind the world that reaching these goals by 2015 requires an urgent and collective push.

Ms. Kim joined UNICEF as its newest and youngest Goodwill Ambassador in July 2010, lending her voice to help raise awareness about the world’s most vulnerable children.

Born in South Korea in September 1990, Ms. Kim began skating at the age of five. She won a gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver in women’s single skating and is ranked number one in the world by the International Skating Union.

Young skating star marks International Day of Peace with new video spot and UN events

NEW YORK, USA, 17 September 2010 – UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and international figure skating star Yuna Kim brought a message of hope and commitment to the United Nations in New York today, joining in celebrations of the International Day of Peace and appearing in a new video spot on meeting the needs of the world’s most vulnerable children.

Today’s events took place in advance of next week’s UN High-level Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals. At the MDG summit, the UN General Assembly will review successes, challenges and action plans related to achieving the goals by their 2015 target date.

“Peace is what enables development and is critical in providing opportunities to young people,” said Ms. Kim. “Efforts to preserve peace are absolutely vital in bringing prosperity and hope for the future.”

‘A better life for every child’

In her new public service announcement, Ms. Kim emphasizes that children are at the heart of the MDGs – including fighting hunger and extreme poverty, reducing child and maternal mortality and eradicating gender inequality, as well as securing primary education for all, stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases, and protecting the environment.

“Building a better life for every child is a lot harder than becoming a world champion,” Ms. Kim says in the PSA. “Both goals take dedication and commitment.”

She goes on to point out that world leaders set forth the eight MDGs in 2000 “so that children and their families in all countries could enjoy the same rights.”

Enabling development

Ms. Kim and others emphasized today that children and adolescents themselves can play a critically important part in the collective push to meet the MDGs by 2015. In fact, the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace – an annual call for a worldwide ceasefire and non-violence – specifically urges global youth to take a stand for peace and development.

During a ceremony marking the day, Ms. Kim joined Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake, UN Messengers of Peace Midori Goto and Elie Wiesel and other dignitaries in the ringing of the symbolic Peace Bell – cast from the coins of more than 60 different countries – outside UN headquarters.

“To many, peace is what enables development and is critical in providing opportunities to young people,” said Ms. Kim at the ceremony. “To some – especially those from regions involved in conflict – peacekeeping and efforts to preserve peace are absolutely vital in bringing prosperity and hope for the future.”

Ms. Kim noted that her own experience as a world-class athlete has helped to open her eyes to many cultures around the world. “Where there is peace, there is sports; where there is sports, there is peace,” she said.

Ms. Kim also noted, “Peace is what allows us, especially young people, to dream, go after one’s goals and prepare you for the next challenge in life.”

The role of youth

In his International Day of Peace message Mr. Ban called upon young people to join the struggle for peace and development in the run-up to the MDG deadline. “Help us to work for peace,” he told them. “You are impatient. You see what we, your elders, allow to persist, year after year: poverty and hunger; injustice and impunity; environmental degradation … Help us fight for peace and prosperity for all.”

Noting that the International Year of Youth began last month, Mr. Ban also called on governments and partners around the world to do more for young people. “Let us give them a world of peace and tolerance,” he said.

After the ceremony, Ms. Kim attended a ‘Youth for Peace and Development’ conference at the UN. She spoke with students from New York and around the globe about the role they can play in educating children, keeping them healthy, offering them protection and working to guarantee their rights.

Ms. Kim joined UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador in July. Born in the Republic of Korea in 1990, she began skating at the age of five. She won a gold medal in women’s single skating at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and is ranked number one in the world by the International Skating Union.

“Good morning, everyone. I'm Yu-na Kim. First of all, thank you for inviting me to the Peace Bell Ceremony and the Student's Observance of the International Day of Peace. I am extremely honored to be part of this very important and significant event.

The word “Peace” may have different meanings to different people. To many, Peace is what enables development, and is critical in providing opportunities to young people. To some, specially those from regions involved in conflict, peace-keeping and efforts to preserve peace is absolutely vital in bringing prosperity and hope for the future. To me, Peace represents a state of mind, being at peace with yourself. I believe that when you are at peace with yourself both mentally and physically, you can achieve anything. Peace is what allows us, specially young people, to dream, go after one's goals, and prepare you for the next challenge in life.

There is a saying, “Where there is Peace, there is Culture. Where there is Culture, there is Peace.” However, as an athlete and figure-skater, I would like to say: Where there is Peace, there is Sports. Where there is Sports, there is Peace. Growing up and watching performances of legendary skaters provide a great source of inspiration for me, and helped shape my dreams and goals for the future.

Participating in the 2010 Winter Olympics gave me a wonderful opportunity to see many countries and athletes unite under the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play. The International Day of Peace provides an valuable opportunity for everyone to observe peace together. As we come together in unity, let us take a moment to reflect on what each of us can do to build Peace around the world.

Thank you.”

UNICEF PR: MDG (Millenium Develepment Goal)

For better life of children of the world

Building a better life for every child is a lot harder than becoming a world champion. Both goals take dedication and commitment.

In 2000 world leaders set 8 millennium development goals, so that children and their families in all countries could enjoy the same rights. I was able to attain my goals. But there are still too many children whose lives are filled with suffering and misery.

We can change all that. By educating children, keeping them healthy, offering them protection and working to guarantee their rights. Children can live a life … beyond survival.

Together we can improve the lives of children everywhere. I'm up to the task, are you?”

http://www.unicef.org/people/people_55988.html

International skating sensation Yuna Kim was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on 12 July 2010, just months after winning Olympic gold in women’s single skating in Vancouver.

Ms. Kim has long been supportive of UNICEF’s work on behalf of the world’s children, but was especially motivated to step up her engagement following the devastating earthquake in Haiti on 12 January, 2010.

“I want to use my own positive experience to help the children of Haiti and the millions of vulnerable children around the world,” said Yuna Kim. “Even in the hardest circumstances, dreams can give you the courage to live, and I hope I can share that message with children in need.”

Ms. Kim continues to lend her voice to help raise awareness about the world’s most vulnerable children. Six months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, she recorded a special television appeal for continued support for Haiti’s children – reminding the world that Haiti’s problems are far from over and that its children continue to be in serious need.

She has also recorded a public service announcement reminding the world to live up to its promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The goals include fighting poverty, gender inequality, diseases, child and maternal mortality, protecting the environment and ensuring that all children have access to a quality primary education.

Ms. Kim was born September 5, 1990, in South Korea and began skating at the age of five. She won a gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver in women’s single skating and was ranked number one in the world by the International Skating Union. She has stolen the hearts of millions of people around the world not only with her grace, wit and strength on the ice, but also with her consideration and support of others.

New Start: Yuna came to LA

“I was training for about four years in Canada,” she said through a translator, her only reference to her departure from her previous training base in Toronto and breakup with Coach Brian Orser. “My coach and where I am going to be training is not decided definitely yet. But I’m here for the show and also find out the atmosphere and environment of training.

“L.A. has a large Korean American community and I also won a world championship here and trained a little bit when I was young here. So I’m going to make those decisions slowly, step by step. Since L.A. is a city that gave me great support for skating, I think I’m going to be very comfortable and enjoy the great energy in the city.”

Training here, she said, “I'm going to have a comfortable environment and plan out what's next.”
